Our History

Founded in 1951, the Hawaii Miyagi Kenjin Kai stands as the sole Miyagi prefectural association in Hawaii officially recognized by the Miyagi Prefectural Government. For over 70 years, the organization has served as a cornerstone of the Miyagi community in Hawaii, providing invaluable support to its members and their families.

Through a series of events and activities, the Hawaii Miyagi Kenjin Kai actively promotes Miyagi's rich cultural heritage. From traditional festivals and culinary experiences to educational programs and community gatherings, the organization ensures that the customs and traditions of Miyagi Prefecture are preserved and celebrated in Hawaii.

Beyond cultural promotion, the Hawaii Miyagi Kenjin Kai fosters a strong sense of community among Miyagi descendants, connecting individuals and families with their roots and heritage. By facilitating communication and collaboration, the organization strengthens ties and creates opportunities for cultural exchange and mutual support.

ハワイ宮城県人会は1951年に設立された、ハワイで唯一の宮城県公認の県人会です。70年以上にわたり、ハワイ宮城県人会はハワイにおける宮城コミュニティの要として、会員とその家族に対し、様々な支援を提供してきました。当会は、様々なイベントや活動を通して宮城県の豊かな文化を積極的に発信し、ハワイにおいても宮城県の伝統や習慣が継承され、受け継がれるように尽力しています。さらに、ハワイ宮城県人会は、世界中の宮城県出身者との強固なネットワークを育み、個人や家族をそのルーツや文化で繋いでいます。コミュニケーションと協力を促進することで、コミュニティ内の絆を強め、文化交流と相互扶助の機会を創出しています。

Tanabata no Kai 七夕の会

Tanabata no Kai is a festive celebration where we immerse ourselves in the heart of Miyagi’s traditions! Indulge in the irresistible flavors of Miyagi’s renowned Gyu-tan, grilled to perfection, and savor the sweet and unique taste of Zunda mochi, a local specialty made with edamame paste.

You’ll also have the chance to try other delightful Miyagi dishes that will transport your taste buds straight to northeastern Japan. Engage in lively games and activities that celebrate Miyagi’s unique culture, and connect with fellow attendees while creating lasting memories through shared laughter and friendly competition. Sing along to the heartwarming melodies of Miyagi’s traditional folk songs and experience the soul of Miyagi through its music and lyrics.

Imo ni Kai 芋煮会

Join the Hawaii Miyagi Kenjin Kai for our annual Imoni Kai, a delightful picnic celebrating the flavors of fall in Miyagi! Gather amidst nature’s beauty as we cook up a hearty pot of Imoni, a traditional Miyagi dish perfect for the season.

Collaborations with Miyagi 宮城県との繋がり

Hawaii Miyagi Kenjin Kai actively collaborates with the Miyagi Prefectural Government and Miyagi-related initiatives to strengthen ties and promote cultural exchange. Notable past collaborations include hosting Governor Murai of Miyagi Prefecture in Hawaii and supporting the government’s participation in Honolulu Festival where they showcased Miyagi culture and cuisine.

Aloha! Hawaii Miyagi Kenjin Kai aims to bring together people from Miyagi Prefecture, their families, and those connected to Miyagi who live in Hawaii, to deepen friendships and support each other. We hope that our members will be able to experience the culture and traditions of Miyagi through various events and activities, and nurture their love for their home prefecture. It is also our important mission to serve as a bridge between Hawaii and Miyagi, promoting friendly relations between the two regions.
