Our History

The Japanese Women's Society of Honolulu (JWS) was founded in 1954 as a cultural and service organization for the purpose of cultivating fellowship among members, promoting friendship between the United States and Japan, and rendering community service. The initial call for such a group came from Haruko Tsumura, wife of Consul General Shinjiro Tsumura, who urged the formation of an organization of civic-minded women to represent the Japanese community in Honolulu.

A more immediate predecessor to JWS, the Honolulu Japanese Women's Society (Nihonjin Fujinkai), was founded in March 1916 with an initial membership of 103 issei (first-generation) Japanese women. During World War II, the society's assets were frozen and the society was disbanded.

But in 1954, a small group of women met to hammer out a new Japanese Women's Society and was determined to do more than replicate the prewar organization. The dream was to harness the energies of younger, second-generation women who were fluent in English and could fully participate in the multicultural environment of postwar Hawaii.

At the organization's inaugural meeting on July 12, 1954, several prominent issei women were honored with advisory positions on the board while the remaining offices fell to women born or raised in Hawaii. In its more recent history, The Japanese Women's Society Foundation came about after the merger of the Japanese Women's Society of Honolulu and the Japanese Women's Society Foundation on August 9, 2006.
