Our History

Honolulu Hiroshima Kenjin Kai (HHKK) was established in 1955 to promote fellowship, goodwill and harmony among its Issei and Nisei members, provide them with a connection to their ancestral homeland, share Hiroshima’s unique culture and traditions with others and foster a stronger relationship between Hawaii and Hiroshima and the U.S. and Japan.

The vision of the founders has been perpetuated by succeeding generations of Sansei, Yonsei and Gosei member leaders. With a constantly expanding range of activities and programs, HHKK has also been able to attract younger members, newcomers from Hiroshima, others who are simply “Hiroshima-at-heart,” as well as Japanese Americans who would like to learn more about their Hiroshima heritage.

Today, family picnics, traditional New Year shinnen enkai, an okonomiyaki booth at the annual Ohana Festival, community-wide fundraising drives in response to disasters in Japan and other service projects help members stay connected. Annual college scholarships for Japan-focused study and international youth exchange programs keep young people involved. In 2020 HHKK established a sister kenjinkai relationship with the Tokyo Hiroshima-ken People’s Association.

Members remain steadfast in their deep affection and interest in Hiroshima and its significant history, vibrant culture, rich traditions, unique customs, interesting foods and caring people.

A charter member of the United Japanese Society of Hawaii, HHKK has a proud legacy of stepping up to leadership roles in the Japanese American community. We have spearheaded various community causes and members have risen to prominent positions in government, business, education, religion, the arts and numerous cultural and community organizations. We expect to continue to contribute to the betterment of our community while perpetuating and sharing our Hiroshima culture and traditions with the people of our Hawaii Nei.

Aloha!

Thank you for your interest in Honolulu Hiroshima Kenjin Kai (HHKK). You may know that more immigrant workers came to Hawaii from Hiroshima than any other prefecture in Japan. Today, their descendants and many others with Hiroshima connections play vital roles in our vibrant Island state.

We invite you to join us in our myriad HHKK programs, from educational opportunities here and in Japan for our young people, recognition events for our treasured seniors and a host of fulfilling activities for everyone in between. If the laughter and excitement of summer picnics with fun games and endless shave ice elicit fond memories of “small kid time,” help us to perpetuate this and other traditions for the next generations.

Join us in spreading our proud heritage, culture and history in being “Hiroshima Ambassadors of Aloha”!
