The United Japanese Society of Hawaii strives to promote the study of Japanese language and culture throughout the State of Hawaii. Once again, we will recognize students who excel in the Japanese language at our 2024 Hanashikata Japanese Language Achievement & Speech Program. This year’s program will be a virtual program on our Youtube Channel. Students from grades 4-12 from various schools around the state of Hawaii have submitted a video and English/Japanese Translation of a prepared individual speech or a situational skit with a partner. Members of Hawaii’s Japanese community and Buddhist leaders will gather on July 14th at Makiki Cemetery for the United Japanese Society of Hawaii Obon Houyo memorial service. The service begins at 9:00 AM and will conclude around 9:30 AM at Makiki Cemetery. It will be co-officiated by Bishop Kenjun Kawawata of Higashi Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii and Bishop Toshiyuki Umitani of Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii.
