Our History

By 1905 approximately 2,900 immigrants from Okayama Prefecture arrived in Hawaii. Current records indicate that 260 live in the state.

In 1927 Okayama Dokkyojin-kai (later changed to Okayama Kenjin-kai) was formed. Okayama Prefecture’s Miki Memorial Award for Contributions to International Goodwill was presented in 1989 to the association’s president George Sadaharu Ishida.

Mission

Maintain mutual friendships amongst our members by perpetuating our culture, fostering harmony, strengthening our ties and networking with other Japanese community groups and organizations.

Events

Annual Picnic (August)

Originally the picnic took place at Ala Moana Beach Park. Games like the potato sack race, three-legged race, tossing of water balloons (before it was raw eggs) and the supermarket game. Everyone from infants to our grandparents are given the opportunity to be winners. Everyone who participates gets a prize. One of the highlights is the free shaved ice and ono bentos! This special day is spent rekindling friendships and making great memories.

Meeting with Governor Ibaragi

When Governor Ibaragi and his staff are in Honolulu, our Kenjin-kai takes the opportunity to reconnect with the leaders of our ancestors’ homeland.

Ehime Maru Memorial Clean-up

The day started with a meaningful service which included a recap of what happened on that horrible day. We were told there are families who attend these services every year. The monument consists of nine rectangles. Each rectangle stands for an individual whose life was taken that day. This was followed by different Kenjin-kai members taking time to clean the area. I left that day, feeling very peaceful.
